Redhead by the Side of the Road is a beautifully written novel that follows the story of a man who falls in love with a woman he just met. The main character, David, is a struggling poet who is walking down the street when he sees an elderly woman. He stops and asks her to let him read her poem and she agrees. She then thanks him for the book and tells him that her son died years ago and she never got to say goodbye. She adds that if it weren't for this book she would be completely lost. David is deeply touched by this story and feels like he has found his purpose in life. As David becomes more close to the woman he starts to see her as his muse for writing poetry about love and death, but he soon realizes that she does not feel as strongly about their relationship as he does and tries to end it one night by driving away in his car. This action causes him to have an anxiety attack, which leads to him crashing his car into a tree on the side of the road while trying to get away from it all. The woman happens across David as he's lying on the ground after crashing into the tree and saves him from dying before anyone else arrives at the scene.
