The audiobook is written in the form of a letter to Andrew Jackson, President of the United States at the time, who is also referred to as General Jackson. It was written by 16-year-old African-American Yusef Salaam and his story of how he became a boxer and a member of the Golden Gloves.
The protagonist of the story, Antwon, is a 13-year-old boy living in Liberty City. He and his friends are trying to escape the violence in their neighborhood. As Antwon is walking through an alleyway he hears a loud pop and then something wet smearing on his face. He looks up and it turns out that he has been shot right between the eyes.
This audiobook tells the story of Yusef Salaam Ibi Zoboi, a young African-American boxer in Brooklyn who is sent to a juvenile facility after being framed for robbery. Yusef is so small he's called "cricket" because he can't fight back. After several years trapped in the facility, he breaks out and runs away to find himself and his family in Harlem.
Ibi Zoboi's novel, a powerful and timely story of love and loyalty, is narrated by the author himself. The audiobook was released in January 2019 under Grove/Atlantic Books and will be available on Audible and iTunes.
The narrator, 'Ethan Herisse', gives a satisfying experience for the listener. He has an authentic accent which is appealing. The narration flows easily and reinforces the intensity of the story. The book is captivating, but it can be hard to follow at times because of the deep voice that Ethan uses. This book would be a good selection for those who want to explore the subject of racism
Ethan Herisse is the narrator of the audiobook that tells the story of his father Yusef Salaam Ibi Zoboi. Yusef is a former boxer and currently, he is the boxing coach at a gym in Brooklyn. He was born in Ghana and raised by his father and then he dropped out of high school to move to America with his family. One day, while visiting his old high school in Africa, he bumps into his old friend Nana Dede who convinces him to begin boxing again. The book highlights a time when African Americans are struggling with what it means to be Black, American and African all at once. The protagonist punches the air because he knows that something will come of this new beginning for him
