Popisho is the story of a group of young people in the Zambian capital city, Lusaka. They are working to overthrow President Kenneth Kaunda, who has been ruling their country for 26 years and still refuses to relinquish power. Through a series of twists, turns, and coincidences, these teenagers find themselves fighting a government that is more powerful than they could have ever imagined.
Popisho is a story about a protagonist called Steve. This Steve is an everyman, and his ordinariness is what makes this story so attractive. The narrator does a wonderful job of making it seem like you are listening to your friend tell you about his time at the bar. Speaking in the third person makes this book more accessible for those who may not be comfortable with reading from first person.
One of the most beautiful and important novels to come out of Latin America in recent years, Popisho is a sweeping drama that depicts the entire history of the region from the perspective of its fictional protagonist, a young man with magical powers who cannot help but make enemies.
"Popisho" is a novel by Leone Ross. It tells of the life of the son of a blacksmith. He falls in love with a white woman and they have beautiful children together. Suddenly, through no fault of his own, the son is an outcast from society. The book deals with themes like racism, anti-Semitism and anti-black sentiment as well as poverty and classism.
The book is narrated by Leone Ross, a 15-year-old who has been sitting on the bus seat next to me and across from her mother for the last two hours. I’ve never seen her before in my life. Ross is happy and content with herself. She laughs every time she turns a page and there are no tears in her eyes when she’s done. During the narration, I can see that Ross doesn't have any anger towards anyone or anything at all – an interesting contrast to what I know about her reality outside of school buses and audiobooks.
