There are so many reasons why this audiobook is a must-listen: the story is gripping, the narration is superb, and the characters are fascinating.
The story of Poison Town by Creston Mapes is narrated by 'Tim Gregory'. Gregory narrates the story in a way that makes it easy for listeners to follow along. The narrator's voice sounds rough and deep, giving the reader a sense of what it would be like if they were involved in the story.
The town of Poison is a small town with a big problem. Every day, some of the residents die mysteriously, and the police seem to be no closer to an explanation than they were on the day they started investigating. A feared serial killer has been picked up in Poison, but his intentions are unclear and he's proving difficult to question. As more residents succumb to the poison, Detective Corbin Cartwright begins investigating and discovers he's been hypnotized by the killer himself.
"Tim Gregory takes us on an imaginative, engrossing journey through a dark world where the same game is played in each town. We are at once captivated by the characters and repelled by the violence that surrounds them. This is a novel with something for everyone."
Ok, I admit it: I was wrong. Creston Mapes is not a master thief turned con artist turned drug dealer turned swindler turned prison inmate who's escaped prison and killed the woman who put him there with a poisoned apple. He's an old school writer who wrote this semi-autobiographical story decades ago before it was made into a movie that has no bearing on the book. It's a first-person tale told by an ageing, one-time protagonist living in rural Ohio that chronicles life from a poor boy growing up to create his own gang of thugs and philandering playboys. The narrator is one of the old guys, but he's still in love with his wife and knows what he's doing is wrong even if he can't stop himself from being jealous of younger men with more money or better looks than him.
