Plantation: A Lowcountry Tale Free Audiobook Download by Dorothea Benton Frank
Plantation: A Lowcountry Tale is a historical novel written by Dorothea Benton Frank. Written in 1935, it tells the story of a woman and her family living on a plantation in the mid-19th century.
Plantation: A Lowcountry Tale is the story of two women, one white and one black, both living on plantations in Virginia during the 1820s. One woman is trying to escape the past while the other is reluctant to move into the future. Plantation explores themes of racism, classism and sex trafficking through a narrative perspective of both women's stories. The narration was good and well paced - I would like to have had some sort of background info/setting for what was happening as it took place over 200 years ago.
This is a tale of a girl who when she was young had trouble understanding the concept of slavery. But then one day, when she is living with her grandparents on the plantation where they've been for generations, a slave comes for the first time and asks for help. This changes everything that this girl had known about her life in south Carolina and what it means to live there.
Plantation: A Lowcountry Tale is the story of a precocious young girl who dreams of escaping slavery and reaching freedom in America. The book tells the tale of a young girl's life on slave plantations of the Lowcountry, from her childhood days as an only child to her adulthood as an adult runaway with her husband and children.
The audiobook version of Plantation: A Lowcountry Tale is narrated by Susie Breck, and her performance is a delight. Her voice has a rich, deep tone that makes you feel right at home. The narration is so good, in fact, that it's hard to believe that Susie has never read the book before. She doesn't read like a professional narrator seeking to make every word sound perfect. Instead, she reads with all the charm of someone who adores the text they're reading and wants you to know it too.
In 1852, at the age of twenty-two, Kate Nealon sets out on a voyage to the Caribbean to seek her fortune as a housekeeper. This is the story of that journey and how much she discovers about herself and her family along the way.
