The story begins in the modern day with Spenser bringing his friend Hawk and girlfriend Susan back to the city after the murder of their old friend, Rusty. They are trying to find out why Rusty was killed when they run into three people who were also friends of Rusty. These three people have a complicated past and soon, Hawk is taken by one of them as ransom for Susan.

In Painted Ladies, Spenser's mom works for the Rockefellers and because of that, Spenser doesn't want to get into any trouble. But on a whim, he takes a job with Emily right in the middle of Cuba and finds himself up against some very dangerous people.

This audiobook, Painted Ladies: A Spenser Novel, is narrated by Joe Mantegna. This novel was written by Robert B. Parker and published in 1981. It takes place during a time when people were struggling to get from one home to another without running into any problems. Nowadays, the situation is different but we can still learn many things from this audiobook like understanding that there are always going to be problems and it's great that we have certain safety features such as radar and auto-pilot systems to help us with transportation issues like these.

Spenser, Boston's PI, is hired by an old woman to find her missing husband. She tells him he was last seen wearing a red shirt and driving an old Volkswagen bug in Greenwich Village. But the search leads Spenser all over New York City and eventually to California where he finds out that the man never existed.

Spencer begins in a very unlikely place for a novel about the Boston P.I. -- the Old West, where he meets up with a lovely but decidedly un-ladylike young woman named Mandy who has been forced to go after her own father's murderer.

In this Spenser story, the narrator, who is walking to a soccer game with his daughter, comes across a building that he assumes is abandoned. After some time of walking around it and finding nothing interesting inside, he receives a visit from a man named Hector Hernandez. Hernandez demands $1 million in cash for the location of an old lady's jewels. The narrator has no choice but to call on his friend and former agent Hawk McGarrett for help in case of an emergency. Soon enough, Painted Ladies proves to be all about crime and suspense.
