This book is set in the southwestern United States during the early years of the 20th century and centers on a ranch hand, Joe Pickett. The book follows Joe's adventures as he tracks down poachers in the wilderness, but it also reveals his personal life. Joe's wife becomes pregnant before they marry and she goes into labor six weeks before her due date. They travel to Colorado to find a doctor but are forced to return home when bad weather prevents them from getting help. Near the end of the story, Joe gets into a fight with a rancher over poaching charges.
“Dave,” said Laura, “please stop. Let me tell you something. This is the kind of thing that people die for. We’re talking about a story of the old west. A man who literally fights his own demons, on a high stakes game with no rules and no mercy. His quest will take him from the depths of despair to the heights of hope and back again, in a global race where there are no winners — just victors. And I think you should write it.”
There’s something about a mystery that makes everyone want to read it. Just ask C. J. Box, who is the author of the best-selling series of novels known as the “Prey” novels.
