It is a classic detective story with Mrs. Pollifax being a middle-aged businesswoman looking for some excitement in her life. Set in Istanbul, Mrs. Pollifax has just arrived to work at the American Embassy when she gets a call from an old friend of hers and he invites her to accompany him on an investigation. They go to Istanbul's Grand Bazaar where they are followed by two members of Turkish intelligence. The two follow them around the bazaar and into many different shops where Mrs. Pollifax does not buy any items. When they leave, Mrs. Pollifax gets caught up in a crowd of people leaving and as she tries to get away from the Turkish agents, one grabs her by the arm and drags her down an alleyway while another fires at them with his pistol.

Mrs. Pollifax is a woman who has the ability to be in any place, at any time. Her main goal is to bring the people who committed crimes against her family's estate in Austria to justice. One of these criminals is Astrid Schilling, a woman who has been stealing jewels from Mrs. Pollifax's family for years. Mrs. Pollifax finally catches up with her when she enters her hotel room and finds her talking on the phone with someone in Vienna about what she just did. In order to make sure that Astrid can't get away, Mrs. Pollifax switches places with her and goes back to Austria to find out where she went from there, using all of her skills and connections.
