When you think of detective John Rainford, images of intense Minnesota cold may come to mind. The author's 40-year career as a crime reporter and newspaper editor in the Twin Cities gave him ample opportunity to make use of his skills when writing novels set there. But once he began turning out bestsellers with recurring characters like Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers, it became clear that he could survive the warm weather too. His latest installment in the series features a veteran cop who joins the FBI after a near fatal shooting.

I can't say that I enjoy audiobooks. In fact, I haven't found a single audiobook narration that I actually like. There's just something about him. It's like he knows what to do with his voice, how to make it sound sinister and unnerving without any effort at all. Between this and my recent obsession with podcasts, it seems like the voices of a book are the new thing for me these days.
