The book is set in modern day Belfast, Northern Ireland and tells a story of a journalist named "Andy" who has recently been laid off from his paper. Andy is about to do something that he knows will change his life: traveling to the countryside to interview an elderly woman who lives in a remote village in order to write about her. As the old woman talks to Andy, he begins to understand why she lives in such an isolated place.

Under an overcast sky in a small town on the west coast of Ireland, a woman stands outside her house and surveys the scene. She watches a group of people surrounding a van and wonders what is happening and if she should involve herself.

This book is the first non-fiction novel in a while to captivate me. The narrator, ["Andrew O'hagan"] has a voice that feels smooth and comforting, but also falls into the category of darkly comic. I found myself laughing out loud multiple times throughout the book - it felt like an old friend was telling me an interesting story.
