One snowy night, while driving, a woman finds a child in the middle of the road and saves him. The next morning, she discovers that this is her son. After months of struggling to raise him, he leaves and goes to live with his father.

The story is told in a classic third person narrative and the listener is able to experience the events of the protagonist's life with her. There are some wonderful moments of introspection that allow the reader to understand what drives her choices, emotions, and opinions. The narration sets a great tone for the novel, conveying both happiness and despair for each character.

In Long Bright River, the protagonist, who is unnamed but whose name sounds like Laurel, has just graduated from college. She’s looking for some adventure and eagerly agrees to go on a canoeing trip with her college friends. To her surprise, their trip takes them down the Long Bright River in Canada. What starts out as a fun, carefree journey soon turns into something much more sinister as they come across disturbing evidence of a serial killer on their path. Despite the dark turn that the trip takes for them and their friends, Laurel’s tenacity keeps them going until they can escape before it’s too late.

Every book has its own unique story, and this is true for Long Bright River as well. The setting is divided between California and Canada, when the narrator's family goes to escape the aftermath of a disaster which has left them penniless. They move from where they used to live in one apartment to a fishing camp on the American side of the river, and find themselves with new lives that are full of promise.
