The narrator of the audiobook is an unnamed American agent who has been tasked with assassinating a Japanese scientist named Aomame. He is not a particularly likeable protagonist, and the story depicts his botched attempt at murdering Aomame.
Killing Commendatore is in some ways a simple novel. It takes place in a single day and involves an ordinary man who gets caught up in the latest, most serious terrorist attack—one that leaves him with no choice but to kill the terrorist to save his own life.
I loved this book. It was so different from all the run-of-the-mill fantasy books I've read in the past, and that was refreshing. All of the characters are interesting, and I found myself very invested in their lives.
Killing Commendatore: A novel by Haruki Murakami narrated by Kirby Heyborne Kirby's performance was outstanding. I found myself frequently thinking 'wow' and 'really?' as Kirby tackled the most difficult of moments with a remarkable amount of grace. His narration had the right amount of humor, intensity, and mystery to create a thrilling listen.
It is summer in Tokyo, but the city's humid heat makes it feel as if it were always winter. A man walks down a Tokyo street, lost in thought. He has just received a letter from somebody who knows his past and wants to meet him urgently. The letter—just a piece of paper with three lines on it—is signed by "The Commendatore", a nickname of the protagonist's late father.
