The Daughter of Time tells the story of a young woman, born in 1890 into a comfortable English family that is suddenly torn apart by scandal. After her mother's death and father's remarriage, the narrator herself goes to live with her aunt and uncle who are tenant farmers in Norfolk. Despite her loneliness and heartache at the loss of her parents, she learns to appreciate the world around her and becomes an accomplished amateur detective.

Josephine Tey is the pseudonym for Elizabeth MacKintosh, a Scottish writer who was born on November 15th, 1893. Her father's name was Sir John Robert Mackintosh, a doctor and physiologist in Scotland. The Daughter of Time is her first published novel, which she wrote while a teacher in Glasgow. The story follows an elderly historian named Roger Sheringham, who has just been found murdered and left with a locked safe that contains an artifact: the key to the strange case of Sir Thomas Abney and his missing daughter. The novel became very popular and eventually made it to the screen in 1966 when it was adapted into a film called Time After Time starring Malcolm McDowell as Henry Knight and David Warner as H.G. Wells.
