This year Bryan Christy is the first investigative journalist to win the National Book Award for Non-Fiction. The award will be presented to him at the National Book Awards ceremony in November. He was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his work on this book.

The book is a compilation of interviews with men who have killed, including those who have killed by their own hand, those who were executed, and those who were convicted of killing.

In the Company of Killers is a novel about investigative reporting and as such, it's more than just a crime story. It has some drama and suspense but it's also an atmospheric thriller. The author vividly describes his characters' surroundings which makes them seem almost three-dimensional.

In the Company of Killers is narrated by Ryan Vincent Anderson, who does an excellent job. The author Bryan Christy and the narrator are both exceptional in their delivery of this audiobook.

"It's not what you've done, it's what they know you've done. That is the key to power." In the Company of Killers by Bryan Christy begins with these words, spoken by a killer named Charles Manson and brings in his thoughts on human power. Christy uses contemporary examples as well as historical ones to illustrate this point throughout the book. Some of these examples include Franklin D. Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler and Jack the Ripper. Christy uses these different types of killers to make the case that "power" is more than just physical strength; it can come from any source: money, sex or people.

A masterful and mesmerizing account of the criminal justice system in America, Bryan Christy's In the Company of Killers is one of those rare books that you don't want to end.
