There's a lot of talk about how society shapes us and how one's identity can be seen as a construct. The protagonist is a boy named Kevin Tarrant who wants to escape from his boring suburban life and explore the world. He eventually starts looking into hypnotism and he accidentally turns himself into someone else. Suddenly, he becomes obsessed with finding out what makes him different from his doppelgänger.

It's the day before Kate's big audition, and she has to do a list of tasks for her role in Romeo and Juliet. But she can't help wondering about who she is. She knows nothing about her past and what makes her interesting to others. She only speaks Spanish and has no idea about her birth parents. Will she be able to find out who she is in time for the audition?

Identity Crisis is a novel, published in 1991 that is written by Ben Elton. It tells the story of the protagonist, John Smith, who has just turned thirty. Believing that life keeps throwing him curveballs, he decides to leave his job as an insurance investigator and take up a career at his father's engineering firm. A few weeks later he gets a call from his father who shares with John a secret he has been hiding for nineteen years: They are not related but rather one half of a pair of twins separated at birth. His twin brother Jimmy Smith is alive and living on the other side of the world. John then travels to Hong Kong to meet this long-lost brother who turns out to be gay.
