The protagonist, Yuan, is assigned to go to Tibet for an assignment that's supposed to last three months but he spends six years trying to get back home. His family and friends are waiting for him there and Yuan struggles with whether or not he should return to them and at what cost.

How Much of These Hills Is Gold tells the story of Chen and Jing, leaves from two very different worlds. Cheng Ying works in a big pharmaceutical company, while Jing Hao is an aspiring poet who longs to make it big in the world of literature. The pair meet by chance when Cheng Ying falls ill during a business trip. As they get to know each other, they uncover an unlikely chemistry - one that gives them a new understanding of themselves and their relationship.

A Boon for the Gold Rush, a young Chinese woman makes her way from Shanghai to California and the gold fields in 1852, managing to save enough money to buy an old cabin on the outskirts of town. There she meets an eccentric old prospector who reveals that he's a shaman who can commune with ancestors and is planning to live out his life on the land.

How Much of These Hills is Gold tells the story of a young woman, Peng Ying, who arrives in America from China to work for her father. As she walks around the city, she sees three groups of people: Americans, Asians, and African-Americans. Noticing that there are more Asian people than any other group in the United States, she begins to ask questions about her heritage.
