How Beautiful We Were: A Novel Free Audiobook Download by Imbolo Mbue

The novel was not my favorite, but it was well written. I listened to the audiobook and I enjoyed the narration. The narrator's voices for all the characters were really well done.

A novel that tells the story of three friends who grew up in a small town in rural Georgia. Each of them has a different path and struggles, but all three have one thing in common: they are all beautiful. One day, this beauty becomes more than skin-deep, as they decide to give up their lives to help children living on the streets of America.

The story is about a young woman, Clara, who goes through a series of unfortunate events that leave her obliged to take up a job as an au pair for a wealthy American family. The juxtaposition of the protagonist's country and the family leaves her feeling helpless and inadequate in every way. However, she eventually finds her purpose as she falls in love with one of the family members.

How Beautiful We Were: A Novel is a captivating and emotional story about the complex relationship between two half sisters, Adichie and Tunde. The book takes you on an exciting journey across America as the sisters fight to learn more about themselves and find one another.

How Beautiful We Were: A Novel is a poignant story of three Cameroonian women and their individual journeys to the U.S. It tells the story of an elegant, educated woman from Cameroon in her early 20s who joins her family in Chicago and struggles to find herself after leaving her husband and children behind; an attractive, determined young woman from Cameroon with a PhD who helps found a popular African restaurant; and a vibrant, charismatic single mother from Nigeria living in South Chicago whose life takes a tragic turn when she falls for an American filmmaker.

There is magic in this novel that breathes life into its characters with every word. Imbolo Mbue's prose and vivid descriptions allow for the reader to fall in love with her characters, which makes it difficult to see the book as only being four hours long. It is a beautiful story about love, loss, and finding one's place in the world through artistic pursuits.
