It is the story of a young girl who has a strange and beautiful garden in her backyard, and one day she finds an old house in the garden that has two bodies buried inside it. She then spends hours each day trying to find out more about this house and what happened inside it. Eventually, she unearths a secret: there are other people with gardens like hers all around the world that also have old houses with dead people in them buried beneath their garden's dirt....

The novel starts with a narrator who is looking out the window at her neighbor's house that has been abandoned. The narrator notices how the plants are overgrown, and how there are holes in the fence that show it has been broken into. However, one day, a young girl moves in and renovates it. One evening, as she is walking back home from her friend's house, she sees a man enter through the front door of the house and walk around inside. She goes to investigate and comes across an old woman locked in a room. The old woman tells her that she will only tell her the story if she promises not to tell anyone else what they spoke of. As soon as the narrator agrees to keep their secret, all hell breaks loose!
