We're introduced to protagonist Jael in her first moments of consciousness while she rests under a tree in the dead of night nearly dead from a knife wound inflicted by her unsuspecting fiance. Pulled into the world by an old woman who helps pull Jael back to life, we are whisked away on an adventure that will leave you breathless.
The Holy Sister, the first novel in Mark Lawrence's award-winning Broken Empire trilogy, is a tale of dark magic, seductive scoundrels, and revenge. The city of Ness has been ravaged by an invasion of mercenaries from the desert. A powerful priestess named Alia has used her mastery of ancient knowledge to create magical weapons that could kill even the strongest warriors in the mercenaries' ranks. But when she is captured by them and forced to use her powers on their behalf with no hope of rescue or escape, she makes a deal with death that will be remembered for years to come--unless something miraculous happens.
The narrator does a good job of sticking to the character's point of view and seamlessly transitioning between perspectives. The plot moves along at a steady pace with plenty of twists and turns.
Holy Sister is narrated by a woman named Heather O'Neill. The story follows the main character, Andraste, who after her husband's death and her young son's disappearance, enters a monastery to live out the rest of her days in seclusion. Much of the story focuses on Andraste's thoughts on faith and its affect on the world.
