This mystery opens on the perfect day for a murder. It would appear that the owner of the takeaway, Angelos Fotiadis, has been shot in the back of his head and is lying in a pool of blood by the fish stall in Harbour Street market. But when a large oil stain is found on his shirt and it turns out to be quite different from what you might expect to find on one who just died of gunshot wound, this case is going to be very complicated indeed.

Vera Stanhope, a retired cop from Yorkshire, is hired to keep watch on an old friend's house in Northumbria. But it soon becomes clear that the old pal has been snatched by a dangerous drug lord. Now Vera must work with detective Rhona Macleod to find her friend before it's too late, but their investigation will uncover secrets within the close-knit community of Harbour Street.

Vera Stanhope is a recently retired detective who's enjoying her freedom as a stay-at-home mother. She wants to make sure that her daughter, Grace, has a great future by becoming a cop. When the chief of police needs a detective for one last case, Vera agrees to help out. This mystery takes place on Harbour Street which has been home to pubs and low-rent housing for decades.

The narrator of this audiobook download is fairly low key and not terribly engaging. While she does a good job of adding emotion, it comes across as forced at times.

Vera Stanhope is a detective in British Northumberland, who has a knack for finding missing persons. This time her latest case is more personal than usual as she is asked to look into the disappearance of her own mother.
