It turns out that Morgan's wife has been kidnapped by a maniacal mountain man who had killed Morgan's boss, an old prospector. The book offers up many exciting twists and turns, with the most famous being that of Margaret Joann Johnston aka "Yellow Rose of Texas."

As the story opens, Jackson Garrett is recovering from a bout with pneumonia. All his strength and energy has gone, his lungs filling up with fluid so that all he can do is cough and gasp for breath. He feels as though he is drowning, that the life will slip from him even though he has reached a point when one last effort might be just enough. But at this point in the story, a group of strangers appear on the scene, determined to help Jackson back to health and give him some pointers along the way.
