When a woman's husband is killed in a car accident, she and her young daughter move from the Chicago suburbs to a small town in Oregon. As they settle into their new life, they also start a new business–making wood furniture. Tensions run high when her ex-husband unexpectedly shows up with his family. The mother must protect her daughter even as she struggles to keep herself safe and sane. Gone to Dust is an emotional story of love and loss, with a beautiful setting that made me feel like I was there on the farm with them.

Matt Goldman, author of Gone to Dust, wrote a treatise on the Nether humanoids as well as their possible descendants. In his story, humans are living in a dystopian world where they live in underground tunnels, with no idea how the world outside has become so dangerous. It's not surprising then that when the protagonist is taken out of the tunnel for her initiation into society she does not know what to expect. She's scared and just about to give up when an alien comes out of nowhere and saves her. The alien explains that it is taking care of humans from the outside world because it can't bear their ills anymore. Why don't you listen? Now that I've seen you, I'll never let you go back down." The human protagonist is saved by an alien and believes that maybe things have changed for the better.
MacLeod Andrews creates an alternate reality of the future where humanity has been forced to live in a dystopian world but this changes when one man, Dust, wakes up from a long sleep. In this world, people are born and die within hours because of too much radiation. But something amazing happens when Dust wakes up as he is immune to all forms of radiation. He gains the ability to cleanse people of their radiation and restore them to health. With this newfound power, Dust sets out on the journey of making people safe from the deadly effects of radiation.
Gone to Dust is a book about death and the afterlife. For generations, when people die, their spirit goes to dust. They are unable to physically touch anything for fear of taking physical form again. As time marches on and life goes on, some spirits find it in themselves to leave the dust world and take on a physical body again. In this story, two teens who were killed in an accident while walking home from school find themselves stuck in limbo between this world and the next. The questions they ponder are: What happens after you die? Will our loved ones still be around if we never make it into heaven?
