Gilead (Oprah's Book Club): A Novel Free Audiobook Download by Marilynne Robinson
Oprah Winfrey chose a novel that had been on her list for years as her selection for Oprah's Book Club. Robinson's Gilead (Oprah's Book Club: A Novel) is about Reverend John Ames who is given a letter by his dying daughter indicating that she wants him to read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation in the space of 100 days. The letter crumbles into dust when he reads it, but he has always wanted to do this and decides to follow through with it.
Marilynne Robinson's Gilead is a profoundly moving novel that follows the life of John Ames, a preacher in northern Illinois during the mid-20th century. As John's first wife dies and he becomes more and more despondent, he decides to go on a journey with his youngest son Lamere--who is struggling with his own faith--to visit the town where he was born. Along the way they encounter people who were transformed by reading Gilead and come to understand that all their lives are linked.
When Marilynne Robinson's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Gilead was first published in 2005, Oprah Winfrey selected it as a Book Club pick. The novel is set in the small town of Gilead, Iowa and chronicles the coming of age of Reverend John Ames, who is ordained by his now-deceased father. As he embarks upon this new stage in his life, there are many lessons to be learned about faith and familial relationships.
This audiobook adaptation of Marilynne Robinson's Gilead is a fantastic read, and it's one of the best books I've listened to in years. The book opens with the death of Reverend John Ames, who has just been released from a mental institution after serving time for incest. He has returned to his hometown in Iowa to care for his ailing mother and reconcile with his estranged father. As Ames moves back into his childhood home, he pieces together the events that led to the disintegration of their family. The narration is stellar, as well as each character's distinct voice. It also makes use of multiple narrators to give us a fuller picture of what Ames is seeing and feeling throughout the story. Above all else, this audi
The novel tells the story of a priest named John Ames in Gilead, Iowa during the time of the Civil War. The narrator, Father John Ames is fifty-two years old and former pastor of a small Presbyterian church. He is left with an inheritance from his niece and nephews who were raised by him after their parents died. The novel tells how Father John comes to terms with his guilt as he learns more about his niece and nephew's lives as well as other people in Gilead.
