Gideon's Corpse is the sixth novel in Douglas Preston's "Pendergast" series. The book was published in 2003, and it depicts events that take place from 1868 to 1869. It follows the protagonist Gideon Crew as he searches for a lost treasure, which turns out to be a corpse.

In 1828, a man named Gideon Crew finally made it to the summit of the Great Smoky Mountains. As he surveyed his newfound mountain home, the wind began to pick up and the temperature plummeted. Then, without warning, he felt an icy hand close around his throat and a monstrous face appeared in front of him with jaws wide open—

Gideon's Corpse has been described as a 'thrilling, apocalyptic thriller' where the earth is being destroyed one day at a time. An asteroid is heading straight for Earth and there is nothing mankind can do to stop it. In the novel, world government agents seek out to find the only person who can stop it: the President of the United States who's been abducted by aliens.

"Investigators have found themselves locked in a battle of wits with a cunning evil that is willing to go to any lengths for its own revenge. And just when it seems there is nothing left to lose, Gideon Crew's body reappears."

Gideon's Corpse by Lincoln Child and Douglas Preston tells the story of a group of people who are living in a remote compound that is home to all the most important pieces of an ancient, lost civilization. They find a long-forgotten key and they learn that there is something valuable behind the door it opens. The problem is nobody knows what this treasure might be but nobody wants to share it so they have to work together.

In the title of this story, Gideon's Corpse is the name given to a body found in a field. It was buried underground, and its head had been removed. The body is thought to be that of a seven-year old boy who has not been seen since he went missing 20 years ago. He isn't looking for answers about his own death, but instead wants to find out what happened to his little brother who died two days before he disappeared.
