Arsene Lupin is the nameless protagonist of Maurice LeBlanc's 1926 novel. He is an engraver and thief who steals from people in order to provide for his family. Arsene Lupin is well-known for his clever schemes and for being able to stay a step ahead of the police. One of his most popular schemes was to steal a painting by Monet which he would then sell back to the owner.
He was in the office of a certain Monsieur Leblanc, when he saw him steal an emerald necklace from his desk. In order to get revenge on the thief, Raffles arranged to have a copy of the necklace made and took it to his friend in London. When they were together they decided to take the replica and put it around Arsene Lupin's neck.
