However, not many people are aware of the background of this book. Frankenstein was written by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, who was a famous feminist author during her time. The author's husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley, died after he ran into a group of people in London one night because he couldn't see them in time. Mary's son William was born two months later and William had learning difficulties from birth that were attributed to his father's death. After this tragedy, Mary decided to use writing as a way to cope with her feelings about life. Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein who creates a monster out of body parts taken from corpses so that he can bring his dead father back to life ("Simon Vance").

In the story Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus, Frankenstein creates a monstrous creature to help him hunt and kill. He tries to end his life after his creation turns against him and instead of killing the creature, he saves it. This is Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's first novel. The story was written in 1818 but is still very relevant today. It can be seen as a cautionary tale about abusing power and how technology could eventually lead to destruction of humanity.
