The author's husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley, died after he ran into a group of people in London one night because he couldn't see them in time. Mary's son William was born two months later and William had learning difficulties from birth that were attributed to his father's death. After this tragedy, Mary decided to use writing as a way to cope with her feelings about life. Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein who creates a monster out of body parts taken from corpses so that he can bring his dead father back to life ("Simon Vance").
