This is the eighth book in the series. Eve comes back to New York City when a body is found and she discovers that it's her mentor, Dr. Charles Foster (Charles 'Chip' Wainwright) who had been missing for more than 10 years. His family has been frantic to find him and now he's dead. Eve learns that he died in a car accident while driving home from work where he was also running an errand for his daughter, Maggie. Now his family needs closure but they need to know who killed him and why - no one saw anything so nobody knows what happened. There is some DNA evidence on the scene which leads Eve to believe that as soon as Chip went inside his house, someone else went into the house
Eve Dallas is a homicide detective working for the New York City Police Department. She's been partnered with Mac Gabriel, who originally starts out as the city's top homicide detective but is now seen as a liability. To further complicate things, Eve is convinced that her boss thinks she has no future there and wants her gone, so she quits in protest.
It's been a few weeks since Eve Dallas's suspension from the NYPSD and her return home to New York has been for both professional and personal reasons. She's had a death in her family, and she needs to get away from the city, the noise, and all of those memories. For three days, she drives west along Route 35 to her childhood home in Pennsylvania. Her grandparents live there now with Eve's brother Lucas who is still in high school. All these thoughts occupy Eve as she drives across country but then she feels that same searing pain that she felt when someone shot at her car a few months ago - it's an old enemy who is using a new weapon. The Eve Dallas series is one that has won many accolades and hearts. In this fourth installment of the series, Eve finds herself thrust into a world of danger, violence, and murder when she is hired to investigate the murders of multiple wealthy citizens. In her search for the killer, she enters a dangerous game that could blow up in her face.
The voice actress who plays Eve Dallas in the audiobooks does a great job. She has a voice that is exactly like the character and manages to make her come alive in my head. The other audible narrator, Johnathan McClain, is also excellent. He has a very unique tone for each character and he seems to have an understanding of all the accents in the book. I enjoyed listening to this book on audiobook instead of reading it on paper because of how well they acted out their roles as well as their voices.
