Flowers in the Attic is a horror novel by author V.C. Andrews and was originally released in 1981. It tells the story of Cathy, who moves with her family to a huge old house in Southern Maryland because her father has just been fired from his teaching position at a college. The house is home to four children--Lily, Chris, Cathy's twin brother, and their younger sister, Ruth--who are all orphans or half-orphans and have very little memory of their true identities. The children are raised by the grandmotherly matriarch who lives upstairs so they develop close ties with her but not with their mother.

When the eldest child of the wealthy Masser family, Cathy, learns from her father that he is dying she is forced to learn how to care for her siblings. In doing so, she discovers that after years of neglect and abuse, they are rather normal young people.
