The first few chapters set up the story quite well, and describe how fragile Earth's situation is. We start with a look at one man who's job is to venture out into deep space and scout for potential threats. There are signs that another race called 'The Flotillas' has discovered Earth, but have not attacked yet. This seems like humanity's only hope as they have never seen an enemy before, but then disaster strikes when one of their own attacks the Earth.
