Fear on the Fens is a collection of short stories by Joy Ellis, published in 2009. The audiobook is narrated by Henrietta Meire and offers ten different stories representing all aspects of modern life. Focusing on the hardships of people living in a small town, led to social exclusion and loneliness, it is the perfect accompaniment for any commute.

The book begins with a prologue about the protagonist's childhood in which she was told that her father had died and her mother was soon to follow. The protagonist then leaves the city, moving around from place to place and school to school until eventually ending up on the Fens. As a young woman after the death of her mother, she finds herself living in a new village on the Fens. She has a job in an old people's home but is constantly reminded of what happened to her as a child when she sees an old woman who looks just like her mother.

The main characters in "Fear on the Fens" are Mrs. Vandemeyer, a widow who is running out of money and must move her family away from their home into an old run-down cottage; her daughter, Isabelle, who has just arrived home from finishing school; and Mary, whom Mrs. Vandemeyer meets in the village when she decides to take up gardening. Luckily for them, Mary and her husband Emil have just moved over from Germany with their three children to work on their allotment and thus provide much needed help and friendship.

Fear on the Fens is a story of a little boy who loves to play in the mud and water but is scared of everything else. It's about the lengths he goes to hide his fear and the power of imagination. The narrator, Henrietta Meire, gives many delightful voices that accentuate each character's personality.

Fear on the Fens is a dark psychological thriller about Lucy who, when she was young, witnessed her father kill her mother and brother. Every day as children grow up in London, they are exposed to violence. This all changes when a new housing development is built on her childhood playground and she meets newcomer Joel at work one day.
