Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian novel by Ray Bradbury that was published on October 19, 1953. It tells the story of a future American totalitarian state where books are outlawed and "firemen" burn any that are found. The protagonist is a "fireman" named Montag who gradually becomes disillusioned with the destruction of knowledge and starts to rebel against society's norms. Bradbury wrote Fahrenheit 451 in response to the threat that he saw fascism posing in America. The book contains numerous literary allusions to other works such as Dante's Inferno, Shakespeare's Macbeth, and Orwell's 1984. The first chapter of Fahrenheit 451 presents an example of this connection between literature and fire: "A book is a loaded gun in the house next door...Who knows who might be the target of the well-read man?" In 2026, Montag is living in a futuristic American society where books have been banned for many years. Instead, people sit around watching wall-sized televisions which display government propaganda broadcasts about how happy everybody is with current events. It is also said that it will soon be illegal to even think about dissenting views or reading forbidden books from before the time when they were banned.
