In Down the Hatch, Penelope Keith narrates her most popular series and tells us that she did all the voices and accents herself. She uses her voice to create a unique world - a world of humor, sadness, romance, and mystery. I loved having this mystery read to me by Penelope's voice.

Agatha Raisin is one of my favorite characters in the Agatha Raisin series by M. C. Beaton. She's a character with very human problems that she sometimes solves with her wit and charm. I really enjoyed the audiobook of "Down the Hatch." Penelope Keith does a wonderful job of reading this story, which has me looking forward to re-reading the entire series!

Down the Hatch is the first installment in M. C. Beaton's Agatha Raisin series. It follows the titular character and her friends as they attend a dinner party at the home of Sir John Fielding, only to have their host murdered before their eyes in what appears to be a suicide. From that point onward, Agatha must solve the mystery with assistance from Sir John's niece and newcomer Detective Chief Inspector Jack Sprat along with other locals.

In the very beginning of the story, Agatha Raisin is trying to meet with her friend, Mrs. Bloxby, who will be giving a cooking class that day at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. She has not been able to find out where she lives until this point, so now she is finally going to go and pay her a visit. The story then begins with Agatha's multiple visits to Mrs. Bloxby's house for different reasons afterwards as well as some of the other members of crime-solving club that she frequently attends.

Agatha Raisin is a middle-aged woman who feels safe in her little village of Carsely, but when her dog is poisoned and she herself becomes a suspect, she has to get out. Not only does she need to get away from the killer, but she also needs to put together enough money to stay ahead of the local constable, who wants her in jail as soon as possible.
