Desolation Mountain is the third in a series of books by William Kent Krueger. It tells the story of a New York City cop who takes a vacation in Montana to help him escape his past and find himself. He ends up taking refuge at a small mountain resort with a dark past of its own. The author does an excellent job conveying the emotions that people go through when they are trying to move on from their painful pasts.

"Desolation Mountain" is a gripping novel that takes the reader on an emotional journey full of suspense and intrigue, deep character development and vivid descriptions. The story is told from the perspective of twelve-year old Joe Ambrose who witnesses a harrowing crime. Joe's father, a police detective who has been assigned to the case, struggles with guilt for his own personal shortcomings and his family's history of mental illness.
