Deacon King Kong: A Novel Free Audiobook Download by James McBride

Deacon King Kong is a story that follows a young man's coming of age in the 1950s and early sixties. Deacon King Kong is an African-American butler who serves as the head of household to one of Detroit's wealthiest families. Deacon begins his journey as a young boy in the segregated South during Dixiecrat primaries and ends his time working for the wealthy family in Detroit with the same name. In between, he experiences racism on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line and brutally honest conversations about race relations, classism, and Christianity.

Deacon King Kong tells the story of four people who have been severely impacted by racism and segregation in 1950s Chicago. Charlie is an African American, a self-described "wild man", who sets out to make money off of the new black population that has moved into his neighborhood. He's helped along by the gangster kingpin, Deacon King Kong. Hoxie is a white boy who was in love with a black girl until she left him for another man—and he may have killed her before she died. Wallace is a young boy struggling to stay afloat on his own after his mother dies and his father abandons him. And Jimbo is a black man strictly abiding by the rules for surviving in his tough neighborhood.

King Kong is reborn in a black America that is riven by violence, greed and corruption - and where the only thing more dangerous than racism is forgetting it.

The book was chosen for Oprah's Bookclub and is about a black man who had never dreamed of college. The story is told through the perspective of his son. It follows him throughout his life, taking in the events of his first marriage, the death of a son, and finally an event that changes everything.

Deacon King Kong is a novel of deep insight and poignancy that traces the footsteps of both a reclusive Japanese billionaire and his American grandson.

Deacon King Kong is the story of a young man who was raised by his grandfather on a plantation in the rural South. A son of sharecroppers, he excels in athletics and is first in his class at school. It is not until he goes to college that Deacon meets the love of his life, Arla Mae McQueen, the daughter of one of the wealthiest men in town. As their relationship blossoms into something beautiful, Arla Mae's parents become suspicious and Deacon must protect her family and himself.
