The narrator is 'Aoife McMahon', a young woman who recently relocated to Ireland after graduating with a degree in literature. She is trying to make sense of her mediocre career in fiction, and her relationship with her pen friend, Leo. Aoife's voice is at once charming, confident and vulnerable; while the story unfolds, these qualities shine through as the narrator's voice becomes more familiar.

Conversations with Friends: A Novel has won the 2018 Man Booker Prize, it's written by the Irish author Sally Rooney. The audiobook is narrated by Aoife McMahon who has a beautiful voice.

This audiobook was a great listen. The reader was very easy to listen to and had a good bedside manner. I liked that she took care to make sure the pronunciation of each word was correct, even if it meant pausing at the end of sentences while trying to find the correct pronounciation. She also went into more detail than necessary when describing the actions of some of the characters

The novel consists of letters written by the protagonist Frances, as well as her friends Maud and Molly. Letters are delivered to each other in person or via social media. The three young women are growing up in a small Irish town called Ballybeg. Frances's upbringing is surrounded by poverty, difficult family relations, and a sense of hopelessness that is never addressed directly. In contrast to these issues, Maud and Molly seem to have it all together with social status and material comfort, as well as their own personal lives. Throughout the course of the book, Frances slowly begins to open up about her family's history and struggles with mental health.

The novel opens with Frances, who is 16 years old and a student at an all-girls school in Dublin. Her mother is away for the summer and she had two best friends: Micheál, who was her boyfriend until recently, and Kitty, a quiet girl who has been her friend since they met. Frances is now having a more difficult time at school as girls are talk of "putting on weight" as they're approaching their last year of high school. And yet, it's not entirely clear how these conversations manifest themselves: we hear them but never see them.

"This is a compelling and beautifully written novel that resonates with the complexity of human emotions" (Christian affiliation) This audiobook consists of six conversations between women who grew up together. The narrator has a British accent. One woman is an author, the other a student. They talk about sex, school, work, love and gossip.
