Several months ago, I decided to give it a try and listen to the entire Angie Thomas novel, Concrete Rose. The book follows 16-year-old Starr Carter as she's forced to go to live with her father in New York City after being kicked out of her neighborhood under suspicion of being involved in a drug trafficking ring. At first it's tough for Starr, but she quickly adjusts and starts attending a new school where she meets some of the coolest people around. When an opportunity arises, Starr must decide between following her dreams or staying true to the friends that helped her get through it all.

Concrete Rose is a captivating and enthralling story narrated by Dion Graham, an actor with a rich, powerful voice that perfectly suits the tone of the novel. The book is both heartbreaking and thought-provoking in its exploration of race, social injustice, and love in America.

The main character in this book, 16-year old Maya, has a normal life and things are going just as she expected. One day she finds out her mom is marrying a guy from her dad's side of the family and their whole world changes. The new stepfather tries to break them apart and Maya must find a way to stay together with her mom and little brother.
