Commonwealth Free Audiobook Download by Ann Patchett

Commonwealth is a timely and powerful novel of suspense set in the aftermath of the events of September 11, 2001. It's told in the voice of Sara Pym, a woman who was raising her daughter and writing novels well into her 40s. With these two loves already consuming her life, Sara has been blindsided by an invitation to join her estranged father's investment firm that offers a slim chance of redemption for the disgraced CEO who owns it.

The novel is narrated by the character Hope Davis, who is married to Graham. A few days before the wedding, she meets him in a coffee shop and he charms her with his smile and humour. He has a young daughter named Lucy; Hope is drawn to their innocence and serene nature. They fall in love, but Graham is working as an editor for HarperCollins on a book about Amish people, so he can't be found out about their affair.

Commonwealth is a beautifully written novel that tells the story of Patchett's childhood and those around her. The story is told through six different characters, one for each chapter. Some chapters are from different perspectives that overlap with others. This made it harder to follow at times but also helps you understand why some things happen in the book.

The narrator is a woman who was once married to a man who killed her father when she was 10 years old. She has just found out the man is still alive and they have a daughter together. She then decides to travel back in time and tell him before he kills her father. Her journey takes her back through the 50s, 60s, and 70s.

This is a literary and historical novel that follows three intertwining stories. The first story follows Harriet and her family as they learn about their ancestry and the history of their family in turn-of-the century America. The second story follows Linnet, an African American woman who learns about the history of her country through the lens of slavery in America. The third story follows Jenny, whose husband leaves for Africa to work for Doctors Without Borders.

I love Ann Patchett's books. I have a lot of favorites, but Commonwealth was my first. The audiobook for this book is narrated by 'Hope Davis' so if you're looking for a new audiobook to listen to, or want to read the book too (it's a great book), check out the Commonwealth audiobook on Audible or a library download!
