This coming-of-age story with a twist is told through prose and poetry as well as flashback sequences from the narrator's perspective.

This audiobook is just wonderful. And there's not much more that I can say that you wouldn't be able to find in the book.

Comfort Me With Apples is a novel by Catherynne Valente. It's a dark fantasy story told in parts of different time periods, with the main character being the daughter of Death. Orphaned as an infant during World War II, she was taken in by Death and taught her trade until she was old enough to take over for him.

The story is the tale of a girl who, after being taken away from her parents by sickness, is found by other children in a vast and dangerous forest. The children find ways to control her, and make her build for them a hut in which she must live. This is not without its challenges as the children pester her constantly. One day, when she finds apple blossoms by the side of the hut, she decides to make an apple tree that will give her true happiness.

A couple of youngsters flee a war-torn city for the country and are taken in by an apple orchard. There they find a splendor of natural beauty and plenty to eat, as well as a mysterious old woman who seems to know their secret.

Comfort Me With Apples is a collection of stories about the things that we might want to satisfy our desire for comfort and home, but are not satisfied with in reality. The chapters are all titled after different types of comfort, from pancakes to hot chocolate, from blankets to movies.
