This is a first novel by Elizabeth Macneal that is well worth a listen. All the characters are believable and keep you wanting to know more about them as you hear more about their lives. The author does an excellent job of moving the story along slowly, so that it seems realistic, although the idea of traveling in time with a circus sounds rather fantastic.

As the narrator, called 'Tuppence' by her circus family, Tuppence has an old soul and a deep desire to understand life. The novel is set in the mid 1800s and follows Tuppence as she leaves her family's circus to travel across Europe. There, she meets an interesting cast of characters and immerses herself in various cultures- learning about life, love, and death on a personal level.

The story begins as he introduces her to a shadowy world where magic and mayhem abound, but there are also dark secrets that await her within its folds.

[Tuppence Middleton]'s voice is gentle and soothing bringing to life this magical story of a boy and girl who find a talking bird in their garden. Her narration helps us learn more about the characters throughout the story.
