"It's bad, isn't it?" asked the girl with a tremulous voice. "Bad? How could it be anything but bad?" said Macondo. "You were going to die--as I am dying now."

This is a story narrated by a man who has lived his life in a small village. He is not rich but he does live in relative peace and serenity which contrasts with the rest of the world. However, when a man from outside the village visits their village and announces that there will be a lottery and one person will have to die. This changes everything for this narrator because he knows that this man is once again trying to control people and they cannot help themselves.

The story is about a humble family in the Colombian town of Aracataca, who live poverty-stricken lives and are treated poorly by their neighbors and employers. One night, Santiago Nasar goes to visit the house of his mother's relatives for the first time in years, whereupon he encounters his cousin Lusciousa her husband and children.

I don't usually like to read a book where I can hear the protagonist's thoughts, but this one was so good I felt compelled to listen. The story is told from the point of view of an unnamed narrator who lives in an unnamed city where he watches an old woman preparing her family's dinner and speaks with her. She talks about a controversial murder case that has just come to trial.
