Care Of: Letters, Connections, and Cures Free Audiobook Download by Ivan Coyote

Care Of: Letters, Connections, and Cures is a 2018 audiobook by Ivan Coyote. This science fiction novel takes place in the near future when humans are unable to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease. The protagonist, who writes letters of hope and despair for dying patients and their families, unexpectedly meets the only person who can help them save the world--an elderly man who is living on Earth before it was colonized.

Care Of: Letters, Connections, and Cures is a book that follows the story of a young woman who is trying to find out why she has been plagued with kidney disease. She travels through her own history as she discovers her difficult past and comes to understand what might be going on in her future. In contrast, it also explores the world of astrology and even takes us into the mystical realms of dream interpretations.

Care Of: Letters, Connections, and Cures is a story of how an old woman's letters to her daughter changed the course of her life. The story touches on topics such as poverty, motherhood, mental illness, addiction, and love. The narrator uses several different voices to tell the story in alternating chapters from protagonist, author Monica Siskind's perspective and from mother's perspective with heart of the book being one simple letter written by Alice Leary .

There are many stories in the book, but the one that struck me most was "The Ferret Story." The story starts with a ferret named Beezer. To escape from the cage of his owner's porch and make some distance from her he began to run away, only to fall off the roof and hit his head on a rock. He scrambled back up saying 'Hurts.' A few hours later, he was still alive. He awoke to find that he had lost all vision in one eye and couldn't see out of his other eye.

"This is a book about the power of connection and how it has the potential to transform us," says [Ivan Coyote] in his narration. "What does it mean to connect with others? This book will explore this idea, using letters and connections from Alice Walker, unknown stories from Civil War nurses and more."

If you are struggling with depression, I highly recommend this book. The author is a counselor, and the book's tone is very down-to-earth and accessible. It provides a lot of helpful information about coping skills for those living with depression, as well as some thought exercises for how to improve your mental health overall.
