Much of the action unfolds on board a giant passenger liner, the world's biggest ocean liner, the Titanic. As it sails close to Cabo Trafalgar, off the coast of southern Spain, there is an explosion which destroys part of the ship and sends its bow into a dive. The captain and most of his crew are killed, but one mechanic and two stokers survive. Together they get off the stricken vessel, swim to shore and make their way through a forest in search of civilization only to run into another survivor from the Titanic.
The story of the treasure hunt, narrated by a 21st-century narrator, is presented in a nonlinear way. The author uses different narrators to tell parts of the story at different times in the past and future, but they are all referring back to the true protagonist.
In the novel, Captain Fermín Salazar and engineer Antonia Colmenares are on a routine patrol when they see a small boat approaching them. When they inspect the boat, they find three men in it and one of them is fully dressed like a woman. It turns out that this man is an escaped convict from prison who had been living as a woman for some time because he was gay.
In 1801 the only natural obstacle in the Gulf of Cadiz, which is a narrow strait between Spain and Morocco, was Cap Trafalgar - so called because it was at this cape that the British fleet had been defeated by Admiral Nelson's. In January 1941 a Spanish patrol boat disappeared with all hands on board. The ensuing investigation found that its commander had deliberately scuttled it and taken his 30 men to England. He claimed to have been commissioned by Franco to keep watch on the Moors.
On the morning of Trafalgar Day, 1805, they found the body of a hanged man on the fort's ramparts. Trafalgar was to be a victory like no other, and its outcome would decide the fate of Europe. But on that day, in this place, at this hour, someone had taken a step into darkness.
