Bright Burning Things: A Novel Free Audiobook Download by Lisa Harding
Bright Burning Things: A Novel by Lisa Harding is a contemporary novel following the lives of three women with different backgrounds and motivations who meet in an all-female environment. In this book, the author of Bright Burning Things pays homage to the 'domestic goddess' archetype. The women in this book are assertive, pragmatic, and confident in their own goals and ambitions. The reader is taken on a fluid journey through these characters lives while they are each trying to figure out what they want out of themselves--and finding it, often unknowingly--and how they can achieve their dreams.
A young woman named Adelaide is desperate to escape the confines of her small town and find a way out. She's tired of being told what she should be doing, who she should be becoming, but most of all she just wants to take back her life. Then one day she meets a man, who seems like the answer to all her prayers. He tells Adelaide that he can help put on the breaks on the machine-driven society she has been living in for decades, and he promises that it'll be worth it. That night Adelaide watches a movie about an escaped lab rat talking with his creators about how he used to believe that everything was for him to figure out and learn more about.
In the beginning of the novel, Virginia sees a light. It is in the shape of a person and its pattern changes from time to time. This light has become as important as her day-to-day life. As she's driven around by her husband, on their way to pick up their son from his overnight with his grandparents, Virginia gets distracted in front of this light and causes a car crash. She wakes up later in the hospital with no idea what happened except that her husband left her there and ran away with the kids to keep them safe while she recovers from her "accident."
The narrator, Lisa Harding, sets the tone for the novel with an introduction of a child trying to understand and make sense of the world around her. The novel is told through a series of letters written by Rowan, an 11-year-old girl who is sent away from her home in the Appalachian mountains to live with her newly deceased grandfather. Rowan's letters are organized into sections that detail different topics - her thoughts on death and dying, her childhood memories, and finally the story itself.
