The protagonist, Cassie, is on the final day of her senior year in high school with a massive party planned for the night. When a blackout hits, she can't find her friends and sets out to find them. Along the way, she befriends some strange creatures who are trapped by the darkness and helps them escape. Along with her quest for her friends, she also has to keep herself from getting caught by The Master - the person who controls all of this - or else he will kill all 12 of these creatures as well as many more people.
Blackout is a dystopian novel about four teens being forced by the United States Government to live in quarantine from the rest of society so that they can help cure a virus. One of them, Duncan, is black and has been living in poverty with his mother. When he moves into the safe zone where everyone else is going through the quarantines, he quickly discovers that everyone is treated worse than him. A lot of the society's activities seem like they're designed to make Duncan feel worthless and inferior. This leads to some intense scenes where Duncan starts questioning if he did something wrong in order to deserve being trapped- even when no one seems willing to believe that he could have done anything wrong.
Alex wakes up from a deep sleep to find herself and everyone she knows, including her family, stranded in a city that has suddenly been plunged into total darkness. This is not an ordinary blackout. It's the first symptom of a pandemic that has infected the entire planet and caused widespread chaos; all because of a new kind of flu. The only way to survive is to align themselves with others like them: people who live underground. But Alex soon realizes she may have picked up this virus by sleeping with her boyfriend, Will, who has rebelled against the world aboveground...
Blackout tells the story of a dystopian future where power is highly coveted and everyone lives in fear of losing their freedom. The U.S. has become one of the many countries to take over after a world war, with people forced to wear tracking bands to stay in the country. After being detained for questioning, Rose is taken away from her family and thrown into an unknown part of the country she never knew existed before. As time goes on and her life becomes more difficult, she must find out how this new place works and how to survive
In a futuristic version of Philadelphia, color-coded gangs rule the streets and people are divided by what they wear. When 16-year-old Nova comes home to find her mother brutally murdered, she must take on the city to find out who did it while navigating her way through school and fighting off the color-coded dangers.
