It is not until Charles realizes that these slides could be evidence that he is actually an alien sent to Earth as a child that he begins to understand the true meaning of life and love.

The novel is narrated by a man who lost his whole world in a freak accident. The narrator regains consciousness to discover that he has been trapped inside of his own head and he's unable to communicate with the outside world. He slowly realizes that he doesn't just have one personality; he has more than one. Powers uses this character's confusion to explore the mind's ability to create an internal narrative for every person.
