Christopher Buehlman, the author of the book Between Two Fires, has lived through his entire life in a country that is constantly in a state of war. After the 9/11 attacks on America, his family moved to protect their children from everything they could think of. In 2013, at age 52, he was diagnosed with PTSD from all the walking he has done over his lifetime and was prescribed antidepressants. Buehlman's memoir is about his struggle to find some peace when he ends up back in Afghanistan after 9/11.

"Between Two Fires" is a very intense, gritty and compelling story of war, violence and the effects of violence on the human psyche. The narrator Steve West does a great job with this multi-layered narrative. He captures the tension and despair that exists in these pages without ever getting "over the top."

The narrator, Steve West, alternates between the voices of both characters throughout. The book is told in alternating chapters from the point of view of Raven and Jed, who are returning to their childhood home for a get together with family after years of not having seen each other. On the way back, they stop at a convenience store to buy lottery tickets when they see an elderly man trying to steal a bottle of vodka from the store. They follow him outside and attempt to take him down before he escapes into the woods.
