The main character, Fanon, is from Cameroon and we learns that he was brought to America by his aunt when he was three years old. Fanon's story starts in New York City where he has finally found a home with his aunt. But the city itself is not what he expected it to be. He falls into an unlikely friendship with two other young African immigrants who teach him how to navigate the streets of New York and how to assert himself as a man in America.
