The novel begins in the mid-90s with a woman named Lou runs away from her abusive husband for good. The novel then flashes back to her childhood and teenage years when Lou's father brings home an African American man as his new "shelter" dog. Lou, who has been struggling to find a way to make money to support herself after leaving her abusive husband, becomes determined to profit off of the family dog, Logan. When she meets Hazel living on the streets she convinces her that they should both take care of Logan together so they can share in the profits.
This audiobook is about a woman who suffers from crippling anxiety and severe depression. She begins to rely on prescription drugs like Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft as well as alcohol, cigarettes, and even sex to get through life. She finds herself in a deep hole that it seems she will never be able to climb out of until she meets an author who suggests that her story is worth writing down.
I read the book because I wanted to learn more about the Civil War and what Reconstruction was like. The book is set in North Carolina during 1868, when a young girl is abducted from her home by two men who are going to sell her.
A young woman's dream of opening a bookstore becomes a nightmare when she discovers the store is not what it seems. But will her quest to find the truth save her life?
