Barkskins: A Novel Free Audiobook Download by Annie Proulx
Annie Proulx's novel, Barkskins, tells the story of a family's attempt to make its fortune on the border of the great forest. The protagonist, Jacques Dorcus, spends his early life living in poverty after being made homeless as a child. One night, he finds himself hunted by an animal that looks like "an enormous bulldog." He manages to fatally wound the creature and barely escapes with his life.
Annie Proulx's novel, Barkskins, follows the story of a man trying to rise from poverty and reclaim his land. The story starts in 1725 when a man named Dunbar is captured by Native Americans for trading at the fur trading post. He is then thrown into the wilderness with only three items: his rifle, his furs, and one beaver pelt. From there he has to fight off starvation and make it back to civilization. Along the way he meets with many other fur trappers who are trying to get rich off the land as well.
Annie Proulx's novel, Barkskins is a story of two families: the narrator's family and their enemy, the wolves. It takes place in Newfoundland during the 1830s where natural resources are scarce and hunting for food is part of everyday life. The narrator tells his grandmother, who has passed away before this story starts, about the first time he saw a wolf as a young boy. He was alone on his family's land with no one to protect him from wolves when a pack came sloppy drunk and stumbled into his mother's traps which she had set up to capture rabbits. She then couldn't control her dogs because they were all drunk, so they killed the wolves. This event changes the narrator forever. He then becomes obsessed with how nature could be abused by man.
Annie Proulx's novel is a story of the relationship between a Scottish immigrant named Bark and his grandson, Pecos. The bulk of the book is told through dialogue where Pecos tells a series of stories about life in the United States as a Native American. With each new story, we learn more about the narrator and gain a greater understanding of how Native Americans have been historically treated.

Annie Proulx has written quite a few books, but the one that really stands out is Barkskins. This novel was published in 2000 and is about the fur trade in America. It tells the story of a family, mostly men, who hunt for furs in Canada and then sell them to New York City merchants. They live on a farm in New England, which is heavily invested in the fur business.
