The life story of Poldi Pezzani, a Sicilian lion tamer who traveled around Europe in her circus performing lions until she was forced to give up her animals due to the human's growing fear of them during World War II.

Auntie Poldi was born in the Sicilian town of Noto. With her candor, she is a blow to the status quo. She isn't afraid to speak her mind and often does it with a few words that put people down or make them shake their heads in disbelief.

Auntie Poldi is a cat with no tail and a mop of hair that makes her look like she's wearing a cheesecloth. Her owner, the late Mrs. Feldt-Gottlieb, moved with her to Sicily so that Auntie could escape the clutches of an unwanted marriage in Germany. After fleeing to the beautiful Mediterranean island of Sicilia, Mrs. Feldt-Gottlieb leaves Auntie Poldi as guardian to her very young son, Federico. This turns out to be more than anyone could have anticipated because in Sicilia, it's not really ok if you're a cat-shaped person--you're kind of looked down upon!
